The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design at JMU focuses on creative problem-solving and human-centered, empathy-based design thinking to improve interactions between people, objects, and their environments. Administered through the School of Art, Design, and Art History (SADAH), the program requires 78 credit hours, including 42 credits of dedicated industrial design coursework. Students study sculpture and form, drawing, material science, sociological and anthropological research methods, systems thinking, and design theory. The highly collaborative, studio-based curriculum integrates real-world application through industry partnerships, internships, and study abroad. Learners develop both conceptual and technical abilities, learning to think through making with analog and digital tools, prototyping, 3D CAD, and fabrication processes. The program strongly differentiates itself from a BFA by emphasizing analytical, scientific, and engineering-oriented perspectives alongside studio art practice.
