The Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design with a Furniture Design concentration at Appalachian State University is a four-year, professional studio-based degree within the Department of Applied Design. The program prepares students to express creativity through functional art, leveraging Boone's proximity to North Carolina's historic residential furniture hubs. Foundational coursework covers product design, computer-assisted drafting, solid modeling, design drawing, and materials and processes including wood, metals, plastics, rubbers, fibers, and ceramics. Upper-level coursework includes sequential furniture design studios and specialized courses in model making, human factors, and the history of furniture design. Admission to upper-level design courses requires passing a Sophomore Portfolio Review, and all students complete a Marketing minor.
