The BS in Industrial Design at California State University, Long Beach is a 120-semester-unit, NASAD-accredited program that prepares students for professional practice in shaping products and systems for industrial processes. Students build a comprehensive foundation in historical sources, tools, techniques, and materials while emphasizing creative problem-solving methodologies and the clarity needed to express visual ideas. Core studies cover rapid visualization, aesthetics, materials and processes, presentation techniques, design methodology, product development, human factors, product costing, and financing principles. The program strongly integrates real-world application, offering internships and sponsored team projects with industry partners such as Apple, Nike, Toyota, HP, and General Motors. After passing a competitive portfolio review, students gain access to dedicated semi-private studio workspaces, two computer labs, a multimedia lab with large-format printing, metal/plastic and wood shops, three materials resource libraries, a rapid prototyping machine, and CNC equipment. Graduates enter diverse sectors including medical and dental equipment, transportation, consumer electronics, small appliances, and special effects.
