The BFA in Design with a concentration in Industrial Design at the University of Kansas empowers students to conceptualize, design, and improve everyday products, tools, and devices. The program, housed within the School of Architecture & Design, takes a human-centered, career-focused approach to product design, development, and manufacturing, with a strong emphasis on ecological impact and resource efficiency. The curriculum integrates art, engineering, ergonomics, history, kinesiology, and psychology, allowing students to explore specific product interests, such as footwear, furniture, electronics, sports equipment, or vehicles, while building a broad, versatile skill set. Students progress through a 120-credit-hour program that moves from foundation studies to specialized industrial design courses and industry-sponsored studios. Over 90% of students complete internships with companies including Garmin, Milwaukee Tools, and New Balance. The program is NASAD-accredited and features professional computer and VR labs, photography studios, digital fabrication labs (CNC, laser cutters, robotics), and the East Hills Design-Build Center.
