More about
Southern Illinois University Carbondale offers a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Industrial Design within its School of Art and Design, blending art and science to train students in designing innovative products that improve lives in a global society. The 120-credit-hour program emphasizes human-centered product development for mass production, combining artistic principles with technical and functional knowledge across industrial design fundamentals, materials and processes, computer-aided design (CAD), rendering, design analysis, and professional practice. Students collaborate on real-world projects such as packaging, interior graphics, and athletic shoes, and are encouraged to pursue a dual specialization in communication design to enhance career options. The program features full access to the 24,000-square-foot Pulliam Design Wing, which includes a design research studio, large shop, photo room, gallery, and maker laboratory. After completing foundation courses and key prerequisites, students submit a portfolio for assessment and complete a senior thesis capstone project. A 15-credit-hour minor in Industrial Design is also available for students in other majors.
