Kanazawa College of Art was founded by the Kanazawa municipal government in 1946, became a full university in 1955, and established graduate study in 1979. Its Design department is divided into 11 fields, including Industrial Design, and the institution moved into a new accessible campus in 2023; teaching is primarily in Japanese.

The four-year Design degree builds foundations in form, materials, computer-aided design, and user-centered design before students enter seminar tracks such as chair, home appliance, mobility, and service or information device design. A graduation project and community-connected design work complete the course, which sits within the college's broader fine art and design setting.
