Founded with a legacy of excellence by Wendy Maruyama, who led the program for 30 years and established SDSU as a global leader in furniture design, the MFA in Art with a Furniture Design and Woodworking concentration at San Diego State University is considered one of the premier graduate programs in the United States. Housed within the School of Art and Design, the program is studio-centered, encouraging students to develop a mature artistic voice through technical mastery, critical research, and creative experimentation. The curriculum integrates non-conventional materials such as concrete, steel, and glass alongside wood, with over 1,000 square feet of professional-grade studio space in the 3D Woodworking Shop. Led by School Director Matthew Hebert and Associate Professor Adam Manley, the program emphasizes the intersection of design, material innovation, and social issues. The two-year MFA structure prepares students for careers as independent artists, designers, furniture makers, and academics. The program is recognized by The Furniture Society for its unique balance of technical process and creative development.
