San Diego State University is a public university in San Diego, California, with furniture design education housed in the School of Art and Design. The two-year MFA in Art with a Furniture Design and Woodworking concentration uses studio practice, technical training, and critical research to develop work in relation to material and social questions.
Students work with wood as well as concrete, steel, and glass in a curriculum supported by the 3D Woodworking Shop and more than 1,000 square feet of studio space. The program's history includes Wendy Maruyama's 30-year leadership, and its graduate structure supports independent projects in furniture, woodworking, and related contemporary design practices.
