More about
The KCAI Product Design program trains students as inventors and artists who transform concepts into practical, life-changing products, building objects, systems, and businesses that actively solve everyday problems while developing entrepreneurial and professional practice skills. The curriculum centers on a first-year foundation followed by upper-division courses spanning DesignSpace studios, rapid prototyping, materials and manufacturing processes, professional practice, and design entrepreneurship. Students work in the Junius B. Irving Building with access to 3D modeling labs, the DesignSpace collaborative maker space, Beals Studio, and the Design Incubator Hub, where seniors and alumni commercialize designs. The program supplements studio instruction with mentorship, internships through Kansas City partners (Garmin, Cerner, Populous, Dimensional Innovations), free business coursework through UMKC's Regnier Institute, and career preparation from the Professional Practice Center.
