The Red Dot Design Museum Essen displays contemporary products across five floors, including electronics, lighting, furniture, bicycles, household equipment, and personal objects. The presentation is often hands-on, allowing visitors to see how products work and, where permitted, experience their materials and form directly.
The museum occupies a former boiler house built in the late 1920s by Fritz Schupp and Martin Kremmer. Its industrial setting within the Zollverein Coal Mine complex, a UNESCO World Heritage site, creates a clear contrast between coal-mining infrastructure and recent product design.
