Founded in 2007 by Issey Miyake, 21_21 DESIGN SIGHT occupies a distinctive building designed by Tadao Ando in Tokyo Midtown's garden. The folded roof and exposed concrete give the museum a strong architectural identity.
The museum does not maintain a permanent collection, instead using temporary exhibitions as a way to examine design and its role in society. Programs range from furniture and industrial design to crafts, architecture, materials, and emerging technologies, with talks and workshops often adding context for visitors.
