Formway
Formway is a New Zealand furniture design and manufacturing studio whose work centers on performance seating for contemporary workplaces. The business began in Petone in 1956 as Petone Engineering, a small steel-furniture manufacturer. A 1978 collaboration with Wellington Polytechnic's industrial design school marked an early commitment to design. An ownership change in 1981 preceded further development of the company's design capability, and its work later expanded through research-led furniture design. The studio combines ergonomic research, engineering, design development and production, with a focus on seating for workplace use.
Formway's collaboration with Knoll brought its research and design to an international market. The studio worked with Knoll on the Life task chair, introduced in 2002, and Generation, launched in 2009. These products reflect Formway's focus on movement and ergonomic support in task seating. Based in Wellington, Formway continues to develop workplace seating and related furniture through an integrated design and manufacturing approach. Its history is rooted in New Zealand manufacturing, while its chair collaborations have reached commercial interiors internationally.
